LaGuardia & airplane noise

How runway use affects us

LaGuardia has two runways, and which ones are used changes with the wind and weather, so flight paths over Queens change from day to day.

Runways are also closed for work, overnight and on some weekends, and sometimes at short notice for repairs. When one is closed, expect more flights on the other, and more noise along the paths it uses.

We haven't confirmed which flight paths pass directly over Jackson Heights, so we don't guess. If you hear low flights, report them. That's how they get counted.

How to report

Report to both. They do different jobs.

Have ready: the time, which direction the plane was heading, and how low or loud it seemed.

Where decisions get made

FAA air traffic controllers pick the runways in use, and their rules put wind first, then delays and capacity, with noise abatement after both. The Port Authority runs the airport and its noise office.

The LaGuardia Airport Committee of the New York Community Aviation Roundtable meets by Zoom four times a year. The Port Authority lists the dates and says to email the committee for how to take part.
