What neighbors are reporting

Counts reflect who reports, not just what's happening How we count

These are requests people made to NYC 311 in Jackson Heights: Northern Blvd to Roosevelt Ave, 69 St to Junction Blvd, counted by type of problem.

Each card compares the last 4 full weeks (Sep 28, 2026 – Oct 25, 2026) with the same 4 weeks last year (Sep 29, 2025 – Oct 26, 2025), because many problems rise and fall with the seasons.

We show a card only when one of the two periods has at least 20 reports and the change is bigger than normal week-to-week ups and downs.

Counts are reports, but we count each place at most once per day, so one place reported again and again adds one a day. A card also needs reports from at least 5 different places, with no single place making up more than 50%, so a few repeat callers can't make a neighborhood trend.

When a number is under 5, we say "fewer than 5". We show a percentage only when both periods have at least 20 reports; otherwise we show the counts.

We leave out reports about people and households: street vending, homeless encampments, panhandling, noise from homes, businesses or places of worship, and conditions inside buildings. Noise, parking and vehicle reports are shown for the whole neighborhood only.

311 numbers show who reports, not just what's happening. Some people and some blocks report more than others — because of language, time, trust in the city, or knowing 311 exists. A rise can mean more people reporting, and a drop doesn't always mean a problem is fixed.

Pedestrian injuries are people hurt in crashes reported by NYPD in the same area, including crashes on the boundary streets.

To keep the comparison fair, we end it at Oct 18, 2026, the last full week of crash data before the newest ones, which are still being filled in. Counting those partial weeks would make this year look better than it is.
